Uzstraße 30, 91522 Ansbach
The octagonal tower was built in 1750/51 by the court building inspector and chief builder in the Margraviate of Ansbach, Johann David Steingruber. The substructure dates back to the 15th century. The first mention of a predecessor to today's gate dates back to 1374. At that time, the town wall ran further north and the gate was roughly at the same height as the pharmacy. During the expansion of the town under Margrave Albrecht Achilles (1440 - 1486), the town wall and the town gate were moved to the south.
The carillon on the north side, donated by the Lions Club in 1987, plays the so-called Hohenfriedberg March every day at 11.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m., the lyrics of which begin with the words "Auf Ansbach-Dragoner, auf Ansbach-Bayreuth". It is worth taking a look through the gate at the so-called stone promenade, which extends to the left in a southerly direction. It is an 18th century ensemble that combines stylistic elements of late Baroque and Classicism.
Additional information: The Herrieder Tor can only be visited as part of guided tours on "Open Monument Day" and "Green Night".
